HERE WE MO AGAIN – WENDEL CLARK BRINGS ALONG SOME FRIENDS TO HELP WITH MAPLE LEAF SPORTS & ENTERTAINMENT’S MOVEMBER CAMPAIGN
2012 Movember campaign to include Leafs alumni, Marlies, Toronto FC and first-ever NBA participant
Last Movember, Toronto Maple Leafs great Wendel Clark shaved his iconic moustache for the first time in 18 years in support of Movember. Clark’s bold move inspired the staff at Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE) to grow and fundraise in record numbers. MLSE’s 265-member Movember team – Team MOple Leaf Sports – raised more than $115,000 and finished in the top 10 both in Canada and globally in 2011. This Movember Wendel is back and he has brought some friends with him.
Joining Clark for this year’s campaign are fellow Leafs Alumni, Mike Pelyk, Bill Derlago, Dan Daoust, Walt McKechnie, Rod Seiling and Mike Gartner; Toronto Raptors guard, John Lucas – the first NBA player to officially participate in Movember; Toronto Marlies Head Coach, Dallas Eakins and Toronto FC’s Jim Brennan, Ashtone Morgan, Terry Dunfield and Richard Eckersley. The Toronto Raptors broadcast personalities are also be getting in on the growing, with Matt Devlin, Jack Armstrong, Leo Rautins, Sherman Hamilton and Akil Augustine all signing up for the campaign.
"Shaving my moustache last year was a big step, but after seeing the response it received, shaving this year was a no-brainer," said Clark. "It’s great to see the guys from all of these teams participating this year and hopefully it will get fans talking about men’s health."
A key component of MLSE’s participation in the campaign is its ability to help Movember deliver its message to the audiences of all of its teams, across a range of platforms. In addition to commercial spots and PSAs on Leafs TV, NBA TV Canada and GOLTV, there will also be features and segments on the networks, as well as mapleleafs.com, raptors.com, torontofc.ca and marlies.ca.
Fans are encouraged to join Team MOple Leaf Sports and all external registrants to that raise at least $200 will receive a limited edition, Wendel Clark Movember T-shirt and an invitation to an end of Movember party at Real Sports Bar & Grill. The T-shirts will also be available exclusively for sale at Real Sports Apparel for the month, with $15 from each shirt going to Movember.
"Happy to see the Mo's from MLSE helping to lead the hairy charge again this year," commented Pete Bombaci, National Country Director "Working together to start conversations about men's health is what the moustache and Movember is all about."
Starting with the season opener, fans registered with Team MOple Leaf Sports will be encouraged during Raptors broadcasts to submit photos of their moustaches for the chance to win prizes and have their moustache featured during a broadcast between November 12 and 30.
MLSE teams will host two Movember Awareness Nights during the month starting with the Raptors on Monday, November 12 as they host the Utah Jazz, followed by the Toronto Marlies when they host the Abbostford Heat on Sunday, November 18. Both games will feature a range of Movember-themed activities and significant in-arena promotional activities including player reads on the video boards, digital signage, MO-cams and other game operations events.
Additionally, MLSE will be inviting various groups to Air Canada Centre throughout the month for MOpen Skates in an effort to raise awareness of Movember. The first skate took place immediately following the launch announcement and was attended by Wendel Clark.
